Lovecraft Video Games received a review copy of The Hunter’s Journals – Rogues Gallery.
The latest entry of the Hunter’s Journals series is Rogues Gallery, an adventure that begins when you receive a request for aid from your cousin that leads you to a conspiracy involving sinister artwork and enemies on all sides.
It’s another story focused on the Externals, although the Lovecraftian influences felt lighter this time than in the previous entry, Wyrmwood. Nevertheless, the focus on art adds some interesting elements to the story.
The gameplay is largely the same as usual, split between interactive fiction choices and dice-based combat, where your role added to your skill determines whether you win or lose each round. However, there are more Heirlooms to choose from at the start this time, which, together with Traits, lets you somewhat customize your approach to combat and other situations.
Once again, the story is fairly focused, with most side paths still being related to the overall plot. Like I noticed with Wyrmwood, it’s easy to get yourself trapped in a situation where things go disastrously wrong later down the line. Fortunately, once you know what you’re doing, the short length of a playthrough makes it easy to restart and try different options.
The Hunter’s Journals – Rogues Gallery is due out this Halloween, and it’s another worthy entry for the series.
