Developer Sleepy Sentry and publisher Slitherine have announced Stirring Abyss, a squad-based tactical RPG set to be released for the PC.
Stirring Abyss is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Temple,” which describes the fateful journey of a World War I U-boat that encounters a strange ivory carving and a mysterious underwater city.
Although Stirring Abyss doesn’t adapt the events of “The Temple” directly, it follows the crew of a submarine during the Cold War that finds itself in the ruins of a lost civilization. You’ll need to search for your missing crew members and attempt to fix your submarine in order to escape.
According to the official description on Steam, it will include mutations, a sanity system, and scavenging, as well as a roguelike Endless Mode in addition to the main Story Mode.
It sounds as though they’re aiming for a challenging, strategic game, and it will be interesting to see how the inspirations from “The Temple” come into play.
No release date for Stirring Abyss has been given yet.
